From the ethereal gowns to the impeccably dressed staff, the costume design in Downton Abbey makes me yearn for a lady’s maid to help me slip on my silk gloves and pin up my hair before dinner. But for something a little more practical (and tons more comfortable), local designer Denise Allen Robinson of Neesh by D.A.R. created a collection of knits, dresses, and jackets inspired by the British estate. Robinson could see a modern-day Anna wearing this prim and proper long-sleeved dress, while Branson served as inspiration for the trim fit of this boiled wool blazer.
Robinson designs the line from her Ravenswood studio, where she mixes feminine silhouettes and comfortable fabrics with signature details such as vintage buttons, exposed seams, and grosgrain ribbon trims. As a designer for more than 20 years, Robinson knows what it takes to survive a Chicago winter, so I’ve got my eye on her line of cozy sweaters made from wool, cotton, and alpaca (priced $218 to $286).
And, good news for Downton fans: To celebrate the show's fourth season premiere, Neesh by D.A.R. is holding a sale. Use the promo code WINTER13 to get 30 percent off your order at neeshbydar.com through January 8.
