In 2010, childhood friends Brielle Buchberg and Lindsay Segal began selling gently used Louis Vuitton bags to friends and family, little knowing that their just-for-fun startup would bloom in ways that would make Silicon Valley jealous. Both women had full-time jobs already—Lindsay was working in fashion styling and visual merchandising, while Brie worked in corporate event planning—but they quickly realized that there weren't a lot of high-end designer consignment shops in Chicago and that they had, well, found something of a niche.
Four-plus years later, and Luxury Garage Sale is going strong. They've got a brick-and-mortar storefront at 1658 North Wells Street, they do lively business selling online, and the founders host pop-up events all around the country. About 80 percent of the merchandise comes from Chicagoland fashionistas, according to Saddemi, so you know it's quality stuff.
One of the more recent additions to their roster of designer goodness is a bi-annual warehouse sale, which started last year. “We had people lined up outside before the sale opened,” says Sarah Saddemi, Director of Brand Communications and Business Development. Their second Winter Warehouse Sale is happening next Thursday, January 22 through Sunday, January 25, and Saddemi anticipates that this will be their biggest sale yet. “We'll probably have hundreds of customers this time around,” she says. “Going forward, I think we'll be doing this every January and July.”
What's bringing folks outside on these cold January mornings? Insanely deep discounts, like the Chanel Canvas Quilted Floral Flap Bag, which Luxury Garage Sale was selling for $1995 and will now be slinging for $1295 at the warehouse sale, or a pair of Lanvin Leopard Print Ponyhair Booties—new in box, retailed for $1195—which Luxury Garage Sale was selling for $495 and has now marked down to $295.
Stop by the Winter Warehouse Sale on the 22nd and 23rd from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., the 24th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the 25th from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Go early to snag the good stuff—but remember, it's all good stuff.
