Inspired by European traditions in the 1800s, when wealthy travelers always personalized their luggage to keep it from getting lost, Parisian brand Goyard offers customized bags and trunks. Until recently, the brand had no boutiques in the Midwest, but in April a Goyard shop opened quietly within Neiman Marcus Chicago (737 N. Michigan Ave., neimanmarcus.com).
To give the 500-square-foot space an old-world vibe, designers fitted it with chevron parquet floors and mahogany cabinets. Antique wall vitrines showcase vintage trunks, and the display tables are from 1940s France. The design also nods to Chicago culture, with grillwork inspired by the edifice of the Tribune Tower.
The boutique is stocked with handbags, luggage, small leather items, and even pet accessories. Most goods are handcrafted, and everything can be customized with hand-painted initials. Current best sellers include The Saigon handbag ($6,200-$7625), The Vendome handbag ($6,245), the Bourget suitcase ($8,625) and the Palace hatbox ($11,260-$11,425)—for shoppers who really take "travel in style" to heart.
