Many photo editors get to travel to the likes of Paris and Milan for glamorous fashion shoots. Given the local nature of this magazine, I find that my travels for work often are decidedly unglamorous. In early April, I donned pigtails, galoshes, and my "I Support Organic Farmers" T-shirt and headed out to a farm near LaGrange, Indiana. Photographer Kevin Banna, his assistants Bjorn Kavanaugh and Stevie Rischow, and I spent a day with farmer Greg Gunthorp and his pigs (See "Hello, Beautiful!" from our June issue). Here, some behind-the-scenes shots of our adventures

Photo Editor Brittney Blair loves looking at photos (especially of Mayor Daley) and thinks models need to eat more. Online Editor Esther Kang is vertically-challenged and will climb and crawl through virtually anything to get the perfect shot. Together, they bring you great views of the city, tips on how to shoot like a pro, and behind-the-scenes peeks at the twisted and fascinating world of picture making.

Not to turn this into a "gear-talk" thread, but what is the massive UFO hanging off the front of that camera? It seems like it's attacking him.
That UFO looking contraption is in fact a ring light, which attaches to the camera and flashes in a full circle surrounding the subject in light. It is a fairly easy lighting technique to use when conditions at a shoot do not allow the photographer to set up external strobes.
This shoot was a blast. I love working for Kevin. He has just enough intrigue and vision to enhance his subjects without stripping them of self. We were in God's country on that brisk Spring day.
